Dear Readers,

About the Session:

Hema is an artist who works with both painting and installation. Her large scale and highly detailed works explore materials, ideas, spaces and our psychological link to them. Her work has showed in cities across Italy, France, Australia, USA, Japan, Norway. Her most recent solo show in Mumbai was 'Fish in a Dead Landscape' at Chemould Prescott Road, and till 15 February 2015, we can all walk into NGMA and enjoy her captivating installation as part of the Deconstructed Innings art tribute to Sachin Tendulkar.

Mumbai city influences a lot of Hema's thinking and work. She is fascinated by the simple things, the every day sights and circumstances that populate the city - that we all experience. Hema says "Art is my language, and these sources become direct influences. They make me think. How do certain subjects get translated into exploration? How do I view everyday things and yet see it differently?"

In this Mumbai Local, Hema will dissect her own process for us - share with why she takes something as simple as a cockroach or as ubiquitous (in Mumbai!) as a slum as her focal subjects, and how she creates art from it. Look forward to a wonderful visually-drenched evening, and amazing insights and perspectives that will heighten our relationship with the everyday.

About Hema Upadhyay:

Hema Upadhyay lives and works in Mumbai. Her areas of interest are materials, ideas, spaces and our psychological link with them. Hema's challenging aesthetics often makes the viewer deal with multiple emotions simultaneously, creating a dialogue across all sections of the society. Through her large scale and highly detailed works she takes the position of the voyeur and looks at elements that not only create a socio-economical hierarchy, but also an aesthetic one.

She expanded her language to include installations; from 1999 onwards her installations have been part of various special participations. Her recent shows include her Solo Show 'Fish in a Dead Landscape', at Chemould Presscott Road, Mumbai ,India, She will be participating with a new project at Kochi Bienniele, 2014. And India Art Fair 2015 her other recent shows include De Rerum Natura AD NATURAM (group show)at Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, Verona Italy.
