Dear Readers,

Day: Friday.
Date: 20th Feb,2015
Time:5:30 pm
Venue: KitabKhana.

About Aneesh Pradhan,

Aneesh, one of India's leading tabla players, is in turns, performer, composer, student, teacher, researcher, and author. A disciple of Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, he inherited from his guru a considerable repertoire of traditional tabla solo compositions from the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad and Punjab gharanas. Keen to experiment and push the envelope, Aneesh is also a frequent participant in cross-cultural musical collaborations as performer and composer. He further experiments with sound and music through his composition for film, television, theatre and dance projects. He also has a doctorate in History, teaches, has written books and educational materials, is Director of Underscore Records, co-curator of the international music festival Baajaa Gaajaa and, luckily for us, is still able to find time for Mumbai Local!

How does the physical entity of a city, its cultural landscapes, and its complex often conflicting ideologies, drive artistic activity? How does history, a changing city over time, impact musical trends? How does living with cultures and practices in apparent conflict impact the way an artist thinks about his work and place in the world? How does a strong tradition, like Hindustani music, evolve, grow, and yet remain Hindustani music as the urban experience bears down on it?

In this Mumbai Local, Aneesh will bring together his fascination for history and his deep relationship with the city of Mumbai, to talk about the impact of the changing city on his music exploration and journey. Understanding his particular experience as a microcosm of trends across the country, he will take us into the world of Hindustani music, through doors and windows we may well not have known existed. Look forward to expanding and exploding notions of what makes music, and of what makes an artist.

Thanks
