100 Thousand Poets for Change: Poetry Festival

It's going to be a celebration of poetry this October!

With the global movement 100 Thousand Poets for Change having entered its ninth year in 2019, the popular poetry festival at Kitab Khana returns. This year, it is being held on October 3, 4, and 6, 2019. The three-day event, curated by Menka Shivdasani and presented by The Source, includes poetry, perfromance and music. Two books will also be launched. 

The programme is as follows:

October 3, 2019 (Thursday)

A multilingual poetry programme embodying hope: Akil Contractor shares his Urdu poems; Anjali Purohit presents Go Talk to the River: the Ovis of Bahinabai Choudhari (Yoda Press, 2019); Smita Bahuguna Agarwal reads her poetry in English, and renders the work of Firaq Gorakhpuri (Urdu) and Mahadevi Verma (Hindi) in song; Jasmine Kurana brings parenting alive through her performace poetry in English; Vibha Rani launches her new book of poems on survivng cancer, I Must, in Hindi and English translation, with a theatrical performance. The book will be released by Rati Dady Wadia, a cancer survivor, and writer and journalist Sudarshana Dwivedi.

October 4, 2019 (Friday)

Hemant and Smruti Divate, publishers of more than 100 books of poetry, put together a special session with Mumbai poets whose work has found a home with them. Anand Thakore, Ashwini Kumar, Dinkar Manwar, Menka Shivdasani, Mustansir Dalvi and Sanjeev Khandekar present their poetry in English, and in English translation.

"Life is full of beauty. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams," says the American author Ashley Smith.

In a morning replete with poetry, dance, and music, schoolchildren in Mumbai present poems on Beauty that they have written especially for 100 Thousand Poets for Change Mumbai. The event is coordinated by Mrs. Rati Dady Wadia, former Principal, Queen Mary School, with Katie Bagli, the well-known children's author. Lubaina Bandukwala, celebrated children's author and Founder, Peek A Book, Literature Festival for Children and Yong Adults, is Chief Guest for the event, with Ayra Cama as Guest of Honour. Plus, the release of The Miracle of Life, 100 TPC Mumbai's third book of poetry by Mumbai schoolchildren, showcasing their poetry and art creations in 2017 and 2018. The book will be released by Mr. Sushil Poddar and Mrs. Nidhi Poddar. Singer-actor Delna Mody who has played the lead in My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Broadway and Beyond and Threepenny Opera will be singing as well. There will also be performances by Vareeja Thakkar and Dhwani Pandya. Participating schools and organisations include JB Petit School for Girls, The Somaiya School, Fun Ki Pathshaala and Young Writer's Nook.
